Mindful Breathing to Reduce Everyday Stress

Stress is a normal part of life, but when it builds up it can affect your sleep, mood, digestion and heart. Mindful breathing is a simple, free tool that helps your body shift into a calmer state.

Why breathing helps

Slow, deep breaths signal to your nervous system that it's safe to relax. Your heart rate settles, your muscles loosen and your thoughts become clearer.

Try belly breathing

Sit or lie comfortably and place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Breathe in slowly through your nose so your belly rises, then breathe out gently through your mouth. Repeat for a few minutes.

Try box breathing

Breathe in slowly, hold gently, breathe out slowly and hold again, keeping each part the same length. Find a comfortable rhythm and continue for a few rounds.

Even a short pause to breathe can change how the rest of your day feels.

Make it a habit

Practice when you wake up, before meals or before bed. Pair it with gentle stretching or a quiet walk for extra calm.
